The EU has frozen US sovereign assets. This is the most important financial event since 1971 and nobody is treating it that way.

Everyone is looking at Greenland. Greenland is an island with 56,000 people and no strategic product. What happened in Brussels this morning is the actual historical event.

Article 215 TFEU, unanimously, against the issuer of the reserve currency. Treasury holdings, Fed correspondent accounts, dollar clearing inside EU jurisdiction — frozen.

The freeze is reversible. The thing they built to survive the freeze is not: emergency non-dollar clearing channels with the Bank of England and the SNB, stood up in a weekend, because there was no alternative.

Institutions built in an emergency do not get dismantled when the emergency ends. They get budgets.

Was not in the room but know people who were. The technocrats fought this for six hours. Their argument was not political, it was mechanical: nobody knows what happens to sovereign debt liquidity when you do this, because nobody has ever done it.

The counter-argument that won was one sentence from Merz about satellite imagery. That is how the biggest monetary decision of our lifetimes got made.

"The euro cannot remain collateral for our own dismemberment" is going to be in textbooks. It is also, technically, a statement about collateral, which is why it worked on that particular audience.

Emerging markets desk. Every sovereign wealth fund and central bank outside the western system spent today asking the same question, and it is not "will the dollar collapse."

It is: "if they will do that to each other, what is the argument that they will not do it to us?"

That question does not have a good answer and it does not go away.

Counterpoint: there is no alternative and there will not be one. Depth, liquidity, rule of law, network effects. Everyone has been predicting the end of dollar primacy for fifty years.

Agreed on all of it, and it does not matter as much as you think. Nobody has to replace the dollar. They only have to build a second rail and route five percent of flows down it as insurance.

Insurance is bought when the risk becomes imaginable. It became imaginable at 12:22 this afternoon.
