10 Jan — The US switched off the data service that allied F-35s need. Half of Europe's stealth fleet stopped flying in three days. 17 Jan — The officials who said the money for this was illegal were fired. 19 Jan — The US walked out of NATO's council at lunchtime and landed Marines in Greenland that evening. Nobody fired a shot. 20 Jan — The EU froze US state assets. This later stopped the US from buying fuel to leave Europe. 21–23 Jan — Europe closed its airspace and bases to US offensive flights. The US built a 3,200-mile supply line from Maine. 26 Jan — The withdrawal from Europe stalled on the runway at Ramstein. Germany asked what happens to the nuclear weapons at Büchel. It got no answer. 27 Jan — The EU sanctioned the United States for the first time in history. Hungary refused to implement. 29 Jan — Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium sealed the airfields holding US nuclear weapons. They are still sealed. 31 Jan — Britain, France and Norway put a garrison into Iceland. 9 Feb — The US attacked it. Nine French dead, 154 prisoners, Iceland occupied. 11 Feb — Britain interned 1,150 US personnel. France invoked Article 42.7. Two nuclear deterrents went to a combined command. 16 Feb — The US fired 148 cruise missiles at Britain. Britain declared a state of war. 18–19 Feb — The largest naval battle between western powers in 80 years. USS Gettysburg sunk, 32 dead.
Today — Everyone is waiting to see whether an amphibious invasion of the United Kingdom is ordered on the 24th.

Saving this. My mother asked me on Sunday what was going on and I could not do it in under an hour.
Every single line of this is about what was done. Not one line says why.
Fifty days, two occupations, a naval battle, and there has not been a single public statement of war aims from Washington. No address, no press conference, nothing. Has that ever happened before in a war between developed states?
I tried to write a "why" section and deleted it three times, because everything I could write was inference.
The honest answer is: publicly, nobody knows. That is not a gap in my summary. It is a fact about this war.
Estonian. We wrote in a minority statement on 27 January that the sanctions "measure the rope while the arson is at the door."
Three weeks later there is a war and we are still measuring. I take no satisfaction in it whatsoever.
