My son is deployed and I genuinely do not understand what is happening. Can someone explain it like I am not clever?
I am 47, I work in a dental office, I have never followed foreign news in my life.
My son is 19 and enlisted in August. Since Monday everyone keeps saying words like NATO and Article 5 and asset freeze and I nod and then I go and cry in the car.
Please can somebody tell me, in normal words:
- Are we at war?
- Why is everyone so angry at us?
- Is my son going somewhere cold?
I am not looking for an argument about politics. I promise I am not. I just want to understand the thing that is happening to my family.

Tanya, I will try. Normal words, no jargon, and I will not tell you what to think.
1. Are we at war? Not officially, and nobody has been killed. American troops have taken control of Greenland, which belongs to Denmark. Denmark did not fight back. So: an invasion, but a bloodless one.
2. Why is everyone angry? Denmark is our ally. We have promised for eighty years to defend them. We took their territory instead. Europe sees that as breaking the oldest promise we have.
3. Your son. Nobody here knows and anybody who tells you otherwise is guessing. What is true is that the forces involved so far are Marines and the Navy, and they are already in place.
You are allowed to be proud of him and frightened at the same time. Most people in this thread are somewhere in that same room.

The reason this got big so fast is not the island. It is that we switched off the computer systems that allied fighter jets need, so half of Europe's air force stopped working. That happened first, and everything since is people reacting to it.
That is why the anger is out of proportion to a snowy island with 56,000 people on it.
I am going to be the dissenting voice and I will be polite about it.
Europe has underpaid for its own defence for thirty years and has lectured us the entire time. I do not like how this was done. I am not sorry it was done.
Tanya, your boy signed up to serve the country and the country is doing something. That is the deal, and it was the deal in 1944 too. It does not make it easier at 3am.
That is a fair position honestly held and I am not going to fight you in a thread where a mother asked for help.
I would only say: "the country is doing something" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and in ten years we are all going to have to say what the something was.

Not adding information. Just want to say I am a mother of a 20 year old at Lejeune and I have read this thread four times tonight and it is the only place on the internet that has helped.
