Address on Iceland

Good evening. This morning American forces took control of Keflavik and of the island of Iceland.
I am not going to stand here and tell you it went the way Greenland went. It did not. There was fighting. Men were killed — French servicemen, defending a position that should never have been there — and I am told that a hundred and fifty-four British and French personnel are now in our custody, being treated correctly, and will be treated correctly for as long as they are with us.
I want to be very clear about why. When they put that battery on Iceland, every American aircraft and every American ship north of Scotland was inside its range. I was told that. I was shown the maps. A President who sees that map and does nothing is a President waiting for a funeral.
The line of the North Atlantic now runs from Greenland to Iceland and it is held by the United States. That is the whole of it. That is where it stops.
I have no quarrel with the British people. I have said that privately and I am saying it now on television so that there is no confusion in London tonight about what we want, which is nothing further.

Two days earlier the Joint Staff had delivered two binders. The first said Iceland could be taken in forty-eight hours. The second said the British Isles could not be taken at all, and recommended he make the Greenland-Iceland line the permanent boundary. He read the first.
