I have about $40k in savings. It took eleven years to get there. I am not rich and I cannot afford to be clever.
Yesterday the EU froze US government assets. Today my banking app looks exactly the same as it did on Friday.
I do not know whether that means everything is fine or whether I am the last person to notice something. What do people who actually know about this think a normal person should do, if anything?
u/boring_index_guy: The boring answer is the right one and it will disappoint you.
Do nothing. You are a US person, your bills are in dollars, your rent is in dollars, your groceries are in dollars. Currency risk only exists relative to what you spend. If you move to euros you have not reduced your risk, you have taken on a completely new one that you understand less.
The freeze is on **sovereign** assets — government holdings and clearing accounts. Your checking account is not in that category and was never in that category.
u/anxious_saver_88: That is genuinely a relief. Thank you for explaining the sovereign part, nobody on the news said that.
u/fx_desk_throwaway: Work adjacent to this. Two things can be true at once and people keep fighting about which one:
1. Nothing happens to your $40k. Correct.
2. Something real happened this week to how the world holds reserves, and it plays out over years, not days.
If you are 34 with a mortgage, (1) is your whole reality. If you run a central bank, (2) is. Most of the shouting on this site is people applying the central bank answer to their checking account.
u/gold_and_beans: Or, hear me out, physical metal and a year of rice.
u/boring_index_guy: Every crisis for forty years has had a guy in the replies saying this. Forty years of the guy being wrong and one day he will be right and he will never let anyone forget it.
Do not buy a year of rice, OP.
u/small_biz_owner_pa: Different angle nobody has raised. I import parts from Germany for a nine person shop.
My supplier's bank returned a payment on Tuesday for the first time in twelve years. Not sanctioned, not blocked, just a compliance officer being cautious about anything with a US counterparty.
That is where this reaches normal people. Not your savings. The thing you were waiting for that does not turn up.
u/anxious_saver_88: This is the one that got me. My husband's shop is waiting on a machine part from Italy since Thursday.
I thought that was unrelated. It might be unrelated. But I did not even know to connect them.
u/retired_teacher_or: I am 71 and living on a fixed pension. Everything in this thread is above me except one line: "do nothing".
I have decided to trust that one and turn the television off. My blood pressure has thanked me.
