The European basing lockout
The basing lockout was the coordinated revocation on 21 January 2026 of diplomatic clearances for American military flight operations from allied territory. Host-nation air traffic authorities and defence ministries in Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy grounded American aerial refuelling sorties at Ramstein and RAF Mildenhall and closed western European airspace to any American transport or strike aircraft staging toward the North Atlantic.
Design
The lockout was deliberately partial. Logistical support for non-offensive eastern flank rotations continued under case-by-case screening — the allies had no intention of thinning the line facing Russia to punish Washington. What was suspended was offensive staging: tanker sorties, maritime strike tasking, and any transit toward the Arctic theatre.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and British Defence Secretary John Healey coordinated the enforcement baseline after an overnight session of the European Council.
Effect
Aerial refuelling is the hinge of Atlantic air operations. Without European tanker basing, every American sortie supporting Greenland had to fly from the continental United States, which is what produced Operation Boreal Bridge two days later and its 3,200-nautical-mile round trips.
The lockout did not stop the occupation. It made the occupation expensive in exactly the currency the Joint Staff had warned about: fuel, airframe hours, and de-icing fluid.
