The Anglo-French combined command
The combined command is the unified Franco-British wartime structure established at Northwood Headquarters on 11 February 2026 under the Lancaster House Treaties, following Emmanuel Macron's activation of Article 42.7 TEU. It joined the two European nuclear powers into a single operational command and produced Combined Task Group Atlantic, the carrier force that fought the North Sea action a week later.
Formation
Macron declared from the Élysée that France's "vital strategic interests are inseparable from the integrity of European soil," activated the Union's mutual assistance clause, and ordered the operational execution of the Lancaster House arrangements under a single command.
The clause used was significant. Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty was unavailable — the attacker was its guarantor — so Europe reached for the treaty article it had written for itself and never used.
Nuclear readiness
The immediate effect was an unprecedented rise in allied nuclear readiness. The Royal Navy's Continuous At-Sea Deterrent moved to a wartime footing, and a second Vanguard-class submarine left Faslane under heavy escort to join the patrol. In France, the Forces Aériennes Stratégiques dispersed nuclear-armed Rafale B fighters with ASMP-A missiles from Saint-Dizier to hardened secondary runways across the centre of the country, crews at fifteen minutes' notice.
Two national deterrents, previously independent, began operating under one wartime command for the first time in their history.
At sea
HMS Prince of Wales and FS Charles de Gaulle marshalled south of the Faeroe-Shetland Trench as Combined Task Group Atlantic, forming an integrated anti-submarine and combat air barrier intended to seal the North Sea and the Western Approaches.
On 18 February that barrier sank a United States Navy cruiser.
