The North Atlantic submarine campaign
The submarine campaign is the subsurface war fought from 7 to 19 February 2026 for the location of the British and French ballistic missile submarines. Twelve American fast-attack boats swept the Faeroe-Shetland Channel and the Rockall Trough against a joint British and French hunter-killer cordon. It cost one American submarine and crippled one British one. It did not find a single deterrent boat.

The campaign opened successfully. Three American boats — Washington, Indiana, and Newport News — spent ninety-six hours in coordinated acoustic boxing against allied hunter-killers off Greenland's eastern shelf, exploiting cold-water thermal layers and supported by high-frequency sonobuoy grids from carrier-borne MH-60Rs.
They attained persistent firing solutions on the Royal Navy's Astute and on the French Suffren. No torpedoes were fired. The pressure alone forced both boats east toward the Faeroe-Shetland Trench and secured the sixty-mile corridor that made Northern Hinge possible.
West of the Hebrides
The second phase went differently. Two hundred miles west of the Outer Hebrides, HMS Ambush and the French Suffren ambushed an American patrol line. USS Newport News was struck by a Spearfish heavyweight torpedo, flooded catastrophically in the aft engineering compartment, blew ballast to the surface, and was scuttled by her surviving crew before capture.
Ambush took a retaliatory Mk 48 from USS Indiana, lost propulsion, and withdrew toward Faslane on auxiliary electric drive.
The failure that matters
Neither Vanguard-class boat was detected at any point. American hydrophone tracking confirmed both cleared the continental shelf into deep Atlantic launch sectors with thirty-two Trident II D5 missiles between them. By 19 February the French Le Triomphant had also gone unlocated, bringing the total to forty-eight warheads at sea.
The plan had assigned this hunt an 18 to 22 percent confidence. It returned zero. Everything downstream of Phase I in Albion Anvil assumed a result the campaign never produced. See Continuous At-Sea Deterrent.
