In a closed-door session in the Pentagon's National Military Command Center at 08:00 on Saturday morning, senior planners from the Joint Staff and U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) delivered the classified operational assessment requested by the White House on military options to seize and secure Greenland.

The 42-page briefing packet, stamped TOP SECRET // NOFORN and overseen by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, evaluated the logistics and force requirements for an uninvited military takeover of the Danish autonomous territory in mid-winter. According to officers familiar with the study, USNORTHCOM outlined three operational phases, concluding that while American forces already present at Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule) could secure the far north without immediate armed resistance, taking control of the island's population centres and maritime access would be severely resource-intensive.

Phase One would require deploying at least one Carrier Strike Group (CSG) to the Labrador Sea, two Amphibious Ready Groups (ARGs) carrying an augmented Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) trained in extreme cold-weather operations, and securing Nuuk’s airport and port facilities. Planners noted that Greenland's lack of connected road infrastructure and severe Arctic winter weather would make inland sustainment almost entirely reliant on vertical lift and ski-equipped LC-130 transports from the 109th Airlift Wing.

The Joint Staff’s strategic risk Annex was stark. Danish defence forces on the island—primarily the Arctic Command based at Nuuk and the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol—are lightly armed, but planners warned that any kinetic assault against a founding NATO ally would immediately compromise U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) headquarters in Stuttgart, endanger access to naval and air facilities across the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and Spain, and trigger immediate emergency sessions of the North Atlantic Council.
