Read that again slowly.

The European Union has frozen the sovereign assets of the issuer of the world's reserve currency.

I have taught this as a thought experiment for eleven years. I used it to illustrate why it would never happen.

EC European Council @EUCouncil ·20 Jan 2026 · 12:22

The European Council has adopted, unanimously, restrictive measures under Article 215 TFEU. All sovereign US Treasury holdings, Federal Reserve correspondent accounts and US government-controlled dollar clearing within E…

"Let's test it."

Sir, with respect: the thing you are proposing to test is the belief that American assets are safe to hold. That belief is not a policy. It is the foundation the entire system stands on and it is the one thing in your possession that cannot be rebuilt if it breaks.

You do not get to run this experiment twice.

They froze our money. Read that again. The European Union has frozen the assets of the United States of America. Over an island with 56,000 people that they were never going to defend anyway. We hold the reserve currency…

45% average tariffs. Critical minerals cut off. Emergency non-dollar clearing channels being stood up with the Bank of England and the SNB.

The tariffs are the headline. The clearing channels are the actual event. Those do not get dismantled when this ends.

Europe froze the assets of a departing army and thereby prevented it from departing.

Nobody drafted that. It is the single most consequential unintended effect of the entire crisis and it came out of a payments annex.

The retrograde has started. ~38,000 personnel and families out of Germany, Italy, the UK, Spain. Largest movement out of Europe since 1990. And it is already stuck, for a reason nobody planned: the asset freeze broke the…

Fifty days ago the questions in my field were about tariff schedules.

Since then: the reserve currency issuer has had its sovereign assets frozen, non-dollar clearing has been stood up in three capitals, a NATO member has been sanctioned by the Union, and an insurance market in London has grounded a superpower's sealift.

None of that gets unwound by a ceasefire. The financial architecture that comes out of this is permanent.
