Varsity football. Thirty years in this town. Half my seniors are enlisting.
Six of my seniors came to me before practice asking about the recruiter.
Six. Last year it was one, and he had already decided.
I do not know what I am supposed to say to a seventeen year old this week. I said finish the season. It was the only true thing I had.
Parent night last night. Not one person asked me about the season.
Eleven people asked me whether I thought there was going to be a draft. I am a football coach. I do not know why they asked me. I think they just needed to ask somebody who was standing still.
Two of my seniors signed today. Both of them told me it was because of this morning.
One of them said "they killed our guys' allies, coach" and the other said "somebody has to". I do not think either of them could tell you where Iceland is on a map. I do not think that is their fault.
