The Pentagon purge
The Pentagon purge was the removal on 17 January 2026 of the Department of Defense General Counsel, the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller), and the Judges Advocate General of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, together with the reassignment of two Joint Staff directors. All had entered statutory non-compliance determinations under Section 1250A that were blocking operational disbursements for the Arctic deployment. Their replacements, installed as acting officials under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, cleared the holds the same evening.
The obstruction
The obstruction was not political. It was accounting. Section 1250A of the National Defense Authorization Act bars the use of Department funds to implement withdrawal from NATO without Congressional authorisation, and the officials responsible for certifying that money may lawfully move declined to certify it. Without their signature, fuel and ordnance for the Truman strike group could not be paid for.
For six days this held. The carrier sat at Norfolk while the House Armed Services Committee opened inquiries and a coalition of former officials petitioned for an injunction in the District of Columbia.
The removal
On the evening of Saturday 17 January, security escorts from the Pentagon Force Protection Agency revoked building credentials and walked the dismissed civilian executives out of the E-Ring. Acting loyalists were installed across the financial disbursement, acquisition, and legal oversight desks — appointments that require no Senate confirmation. Two Joint Staff directors who had objected to the execute orders were moved to administrative holding billets and replaced by deputies instructed to clear all pending movement and fuel requisitions.
The holds cleared. Funding flowed to Naval Station Norfolk that night, and the strike group departed within two days.
Reaction
Both Armed Services Committees announced emergency joint hearings. The constitutional argument they opened was still unresolved when American aircraft struck British radar installations a month later, and it is arguably the single unfinished thread of the entire period: the question of whether the statutory constraint failed, or was simply removed.
The practical answer arrived immediately. Every subsequent legal objection inside the Department was raised by officers who had watched five colleagues leave the building under escort, and every subsequent objection was recorded as advice rather than as non-compliance.
