Every US tanker track out of Mildenhall and Ramstein has gone dark this morning. Not rerouted. Gone. Host nations have pulled the diplomatic clearances.
No tankers means no Atlantic air operations from Europe. That is the whole game.

The basing lockout
Host nations revoke diplomatic clearance for American tanker sorties at Ramstein and Mildenhall, and close western European airspace to any aircraft staging toward the Arctic.
In coordination with allies, the United Kingdom has suspended diplomatic clearance for US offensive staging and aerial refuelling operations from UK territory. Support for NATO eastern flank rotations continues unaffected.
Note the second sentence. Nobody is thinning the eastern flank to punish Washington. Not one government has been willing to make Moscow the beneficiary of this.
That restraint is the most impressive thing anyone has done this month.

They have closed their runways to us. Their runways — which we paid for, which we built, which we have defended since before their parliaments existed in their current form.
So we'll fly out of Maine. It's further. It costs more. Every tanker crew in this country is about to work harder than they have ever worked and I am asking them to do it.
And when this is finished, we are going to have a very serious conversation in this country about why the United States Air Force ever needed permission from anybody to fly.
what was actually happening
Every sortie from the domestic hubs runs more than 3,200 nautical miles round trip. Within days, mechanics in Greenland were reporting critical shortages of de-icing fluid and cold-weather lubricants, and fuel burn was outrunning the reserve at Pituffik.
People keep saying "the Germans closed the runways" like it is a headline.
The man who closed the runway coaches my son's football team on Wednesdays. He came round on Sunday with a cake. He looked absolutely wretched about it.
None of this is happening between countries. It is happening between neighbours who all have to be at the same school gate tomorrow.
The Americans have come into my bakery every Saturday for eleven years. The big one always orders wrong and laughs about it.
Today two of them came in and nobody said anything except the order. Eleven years and we could not find a sentence.
I gave them the bread for nothing. I do not know why. It felt like the only thing I had.
"We'll fly out of Maine."
Sir, I have loaded those aircraft. Flying out of Maine means a tanker crew doing fourteen hour cycles in Arctic weather to put gas in one fighter, every day, forever.
They will do it. They will not complain. Somebody should say out loud that you are spending them, and that spending them has a bottom.
Everyone in Brussels is very brave this week about the Americans leaving.

Eleven people asked me whether I thought there was going to be a draft. I am a football coach. I do not know why they asked me. I think they just needed to ask somebody who was standing still.
Twenty-two years the lads from Lakenheath have drunk in my pub. Stag dos. Two weddings out the back. I have got a squadron patch behind the bar older than my daughter.
Tonight: four in, one pint each, gone by half nine. Nobody said a word about any of it and everybody thought about nothing else.
I do not know who I am supposed to be angry at and I am too tired to work it out.
Small practical thing nobody is covering: the German kids in my daughter's class made her a card.
She is seven. She does not know what an asset freeze is. She knows the card said "wir vermissen dich schon" — we miss you already — and she has not put it down since.
