Phase II: the North Sea

The largest surface action between Western powers in eighty years. Gettysburg goes down with thirty-two dead. Keflavik's fuel farm burns. Forty-two percent of the American standoff stockpile is gone, and forty-eight allied warheads are still at sea.

We had a minute's silence in homeroom this morning. Thirty-two seconds, one for each. A kid suggested it, not me.

Then we did fractions. That is the strangest part of all of this. The fractions still have to happen.

Thirty-two names were read in my church last night. We had forty people. Six weeks ago we had two hundred and forty.

They did not leave over the war. They left over me. That is fine. Somebody has to read the names and it turns out it is going to be forty of us.

Six weeks ago people here made jokes about the gringos fighting each other.

Nobody is joking now. My mother asked me last night whether the missiles can reach here. They cannot. She asked anyway.

That is what this month did to the world. It made everybody's mother ask.

Four days of Phase II, tallied:

388 further standoff weapons expended. RAF main bases cratered — and the fighter force is intact, flying off motorway sections under emission control.
14 US aircraft shot down. 18 allied.
1 US cruiser sunk, 1 French frigate sunk, 1 Type 45 crippled.
Keflavik out of action.
Deterrent boats found: zero.

42% of the American global standoff stockpile is gone. Phase III needs more than what is left.

Six weeks of this and here is the only media literacy advice I have left:

Every single thing that turned out to be true was boring when it arrived. A permissions change. A payment rail. A signature not given. A police van on a road.

Everything that arrived exciting — the kill switch, the seized warheads, the crew list — was wrong. Every time. Without exception.

Be suspicious of the version that makes you feel something immediately.

Fifty days ago the questions in my field were about tariff schedules.

Since then: the reserve currency issuer has had its sovereign assets frozen, non-dollar clearing has been stood up in three capitals, a NATO member has been sanctioned by the Union, and an insurance market in London has grounded a superpower's sealift.

None of that gets unwound by a ceasefire. The financial architecture that comes out of this is permanent.

Day twenty-two.

Still closed. Still raining. The gentlemen inside are on emergency power and field rations. The gentlemen outside are on shift rotation and thermos flasks.

One page of paper would have ended this on the twenty-sixth of January. Nothing continues to happen.

Somebody asked me today what an occupation is actually like, expecting something dramatic.

It is a queue. It is a slightly different queue, at a slightly different time, with a young man with a rifle at the end of the street who is bored and cold and about the age of my brother. It is the electricity being fine and the coffee being fine and everything being fine.

It is fine and it is completely unbearable and both of those are true every single hour.

Thirty-two days of occupation.

School is open. The shop has food. Nobody has hurt us. The soldiers say hello to my brother and he says hello back now, which I hate, and I cannot explain to him why I hate it.

That is the part nobody warns you about. It gets normal. It gets normal so fast.

Where we actually stand tonight, stripped of everything else:

Forty-eight allied thermonuclear warheads are at sea and cannot be found.
About sixty American warheads are on the ground in Europe and cannot be moved.
American strategic forces are at DEFCON 2.

The invisible deterrent works perfectly. The forward-based one has been converted into a hostage. Every doctrine paper written since 1968 needs rewriting, and the people who will rewrite them are currently at fifteen minutes' notice.

Sue brought another dish round. Shepherd's pie. She said "no onion" before I could ask.

I have decided that whatever anybody signs, whenever they sign it, I am naming Sue in the speech.

My wife asked me last night if I was going to feel bad about the money. I said I did not know. She said "I do", and we sat there.

Anyway. Overtime Saturday.

I have watched all of it on this little screen my grandson set up. I have learned what a GIUK gap is. I am 74 and I did not need to learn that.

Two goldfinches this morning. I am telling you because somebody should say something ordinary today.

Fifty days ago I was writing about a procurement dispute.

Since then I have watched an alliance walk out of its own chamber, stood on a ramp where nobody could buy fuel, and reported from an airfield where nine people were killed by an ally.

And the strange part is that we have been told why, constantly, at length, from the Oval Office, four times. I have the transcripts. I have read them until the words came apart.

On 9 February he told the country the line stopped at Iceland. Seven days later he was addressing us again with a different reason. Both times he sounded completely certain. That is not a man hiding his aims. I no longer think there is a hidden one.

Sir. My son is nineteen. He is at Bragg. XVIII Airborne Corps is in that plan and so is he.

Rule it out. That is also the job. That is the part of the job where you tell a mother in Indiana that her boy is not going to be in the first wave onto a beach in a country we were allied with at Christmas.

Rule it out.

Mine is out. My daughter's godfather's is in.

Fifty days. Two territories occupied. One alliance broken. Two capital ships and one submarine on the bottom. Forty-one dead that we can count.

And the thing that stops it is not a treaty or a summit or a vote. It is two submarines nobody can find.

That is the whole story of this war so far.

He got another ninety seconds today. He said the British sergeant on his block has started bringing tea round in the morning, and that nobody has decided whether to say thank you, and that everybody says thank you.
